Jordan's Highlight List

Master Thor was a neighbor of the Schreibers and as a result, 9 year old Jordan began his training in 1982. No one knew where it all would lead. "I only remember two things from my first testing. First, I was worried that I wouldn't be able to answer the questions Master Thor asked about the white belt form. Then, I saw a boy who was just a year older than me do a jump side kick at the heavy bag. He was testing for his red belt and as I watched him fly through the air, it didn't even enter my mind that I might be a red belt some day."

He has done much more than earn a red belt. In fact, Jordan has achieved more in his 26 years than some dream about in a lifetime. Graduating from Harvard, studying at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, opening 3 different Taekwondo centers, getting married, and studying at Harvard Law School are just a few of his many accomplishments. Along the way he has discovered a passion for teaching and for children, especially helping kids who are underprivileged.

"Without Taekwondo I probably wouldn't have discovered how much I enjoy teaching. That discovery has led me to earn a high school teacher's license and to study bilingual education at Oxford. I also wouldn't have had the opportunity to establish close relationships with the children I have taught. Opening the school for low-income children and getting to see them grow was one of the best experiences. I was able to take them to a tournament, when many of them had never been out of their own neighborhoods before," Jordan recalls.

New Haven Of the key life lessons Jordan has learned, he lists self-confidence and goal-setting among the most important. "I was in sixth grade when I got my Black Belt and when kids at my school found out, many would challenge me to fights to see if I 'really know my stuff.' I quickly developed the confidence to refuse to fight without feeling like I had to prove myself. I had an awesome instructor and we were always close. When I was 15 or 16 years old I was a little burnt out and thought about quitting. Master Thor helped me stick with it. He helped me set new goals and encouraged me to try new things."

Jordan is dedicated to giving back to his community and uses Songahm Taekwondo to do so. For example, each year from 1989 to 1992, he organized Kick-a-Thons and raised thousands of dollars for an organization which helps hard-to-place children find permanent adoptive homes, at no cost to the adoptive parents. And, he plans to pursue grants and other opportunities to offer Taekwondo to lower income and underprivileged children.

After finishing Law School, he wants to continue finding ways to combine his loves for children, justice, Taekwondo, and community service to help others achieve their dreams and become their best.
